Founded in 2000, Mango Tree has developed a
strong reputation for its innovative products and consulting services for
grassroots education and communication projects.
What makes us unique?
- Many of our products are made from locally
available resources like grain sacks, flip flop material, bottle tops, etc. They
are extremely durable and easily replicable by educators in the field.
- We provide employment for a wide range of
small-scale artisan groups in the manufacture of our educational tools. Many of
our contractors belong to marginalized groups like the disabled, HIV+ people,
and women.
- We are a Ugandan-owned company. We believe that
our country needs a strong private sector to thrive and we are committed to
being a model business that has a triple bottom line: profits, people and
planet.
- Our staff of creative, young
Ugandans develop culturally relevant tools and messages that resonate
with grassroots educators whether they are primary school teachers, community health
workers, or agricultural extension agents.
- We believe in encouraging and strengthening
literacy in local languages. We translate our products into multiple local
languages. We also make language-neutral products that can be used in many
language contexts.
- Our
products and services are designed to encourage fun, participatory learning. We
are challenging the educational status quo, which is lecture-based,
teacher-centered, and focused on rote memorization.
Why "Mango Tree"?
The shade of a mango tree is a traditional village
meeting place and classroom in Uganda. We chose the name Mango Tree for our business because
our products and services are specially designed for rural communities in
Africa and because we want to appreciate and support the best of traditional
African culture in our work.
